Charlotte Designated an ‘Innovation and Economic Prosperity University’
The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities has extended UNC Charlotte’s designation as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University for its continued commitment to regional economic development and community engagement.
Need to know: Faculty and staff
- New AVC for Facilities Management: Owen Cooks has been appointed associate vice chancellor for facilities management.
- University Innovation and Process: Mike Carlin, vice chancellor for OneIT and chief information officer, has been appointed to an expanded role as chief university innovation and process officer. Carlin will continue to lead the Division of OneIT.
- Telework/Remote Work Agreements: The 2023-24 Telework/Remote Agreement cycle ends Aug. 31. All existing agreements must be reviewed and renewed for the 2024-25 academic year.
- New Name: The Veteran Services Office is now the Military and Veteran Services Office to properly reflect the department’s commitment to the full range of UNC Charlotte’s military-affiliated students and their families.

- Celebrate College Colors Day at the Barnes & Noble Charlotte Bookstore from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday. Aug. 30, in the Popp Martin Student Union. Wear your favorite Charlotte gear and enjoy games, refreshments and door prizes. Faculty and staff enjoy a 20% off discount with their 49er ID (exclusions may apply).

- Additional APLU Recognition: urbanCORE’s Community Innovation Incubator initiative has been named an Exemplary Program by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. Link coming
- Community-engaged Research: Attend an urbanCORE information session on internal funding opportunities to support community-engaged research from 1 to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 3, in Sycamore Hall, Room 306.
- Become a Sustainability Ambassador: Help promote a culture of sustainability on campus by becoming an ambassador and make a positive difference within your department and beyond.
- Writing Group Opportunity: Early-career faculty are invited to join a six-week group, co-sponsored by the Center for ADVANCing Faculty Success, urbanCORE and the Writing Resources Center, to help develop a sustainable writing practice. The group will meet for six Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon, starting Sept. 6.
- Center for Teaching and Learning: The CTL is celebrating 25 years of dedication to teaching excellence and student success.
- Campus Visit: The North Carolina Board of Science, Technology and Innovation saw firsthand the University’s ascent toward Carnegie R1 research status and its impact during a recent meeting on campus.

Josie Perdue, an Honors College student majoring in communications and minoring in dance, is passionate about connecting with people and making a difference. Learn about her nonprofit organization, Josie’s Blessings in a Box, and her experience as a dancer.

- September is National Recovery Month. Check out the Center for Wellness Promotion events calendar for opportunities to learn more about the Charlotte Recovery Program.
- The Office of International Programs seeks nominations for the faculty, staff and student international education awards. Visit the international programs website to view award criteria and deadlines.
- Attend a Green Dot training from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, and learn to recognize, react and prevent interpersonal violence at Charlotte. We must all do our part to prevent sexual assault, dating violence and stalking.
- Students are invited to participate in Niners Against Violence, an eight-week, cohort-based educational program from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays, starting Sept. 17. Participants will learn strategies to create a safer campus culture free of sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. A free dinner will be provided at each session, and those who complete the program will receive a microcredential.
