UNC Charlotte recognized with Green Fleet Award
The National Association of Fleet Administrators has recognized UNC Charlotte with a 2024 Green Fleet Award. The honor was announced during the Sustainable Fleet Technology Conference and Expo recently held in Durham, North Carolina.
The Green Fleet Awards recognize peak-performing fleet sustainability efforts and honors fleets who have enhanced practices to make a positive impact on the environment. These awards recognize organizations that execute groundbreaking and inventive programs for their green initiatives.
UNC Charlotte was one of four universities to receive a Green Fleet Award. The University of California, Irvine; the University of Virginia; and the University of California, Los Angeles made the list along with the city of Charlotte.
“UNC Charlotte is committed to fleet sustainability,” said Marc Casanova, assistant director of fleet, warehouse and logistics. “We have one of the largest electric vehicle fleets of any college campus, and we are a leader in procurement and maintenance of low-speed electric vehicles.”
Over the past two years, the University has purchased 54 new electric vehicles, including 37 MAX-EVs and 14 Mullen vans for campus shops, primarily replacing gasoline vehicles over 15 years old. In addition, the University has replaced most early low-speed EVs that used lead-acid batteries with lithium-based EVs, gaining both range and life expectancy. This also allows for plug-sharing, reducing the demand for EV chargers.
