Erik Byker and Susan K. Michael Named 2024 Teaching Excellence Award Winners
The Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence and the UNC Charlotte Award for Teaching Excellence are two of the most prestigious traditions at Charlotte. This year’s recipients are Erik Byker, professor of reading and elementary education, for the Bank of America award and Susan K. Michael, senior lecturer of chemistry, for the UNC Charlotte award.

- The 2024 International Festival, UNC Charlotte’s longest-running cultural event, is set for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, in and around the Barnhardt Student Activity Center. This year’s festival is also part of the Charlotte International Arts Festival as a cultural partner.

- Open Enrollment HR Power Hour: Human resources is hosting an HR Power Hour at noon, Thursday, Sept. 12, to inform Charlotte employees about the open enrollment process. Participants will have a chance to ask questions about their state health plan benefits and NCFlex benefits for 2025.
- CAPTRUST Financial Advisors: The independent advisory firm that works on the UNC Retirement Programs will conduct phone consultations Monday, Sept. 16; Monday, Sept. 23; Tuesday, Sept. 24; and Thursday, Sept. 26. Topics covered in the 45-minute individual advisory sessions include, but are not limited to, retirement and general financial planning, investment education and advice.
- Blood Drive: The College of Health and Human Services is hosting a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
- Instructor-Led Training: If you are interested in providing instructor-led training (virtual and in person) in the Learning and Development Portal, please fill out this Google form; learn more about the portal.
- 25th Anniversary Party: RSVP to the CTL 25th Anniversary Party from 3 to 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 1, in the Kennedy Building. Enjoy refreshments, recognitions and relationship building!

- Students are invited to participate in Niners Against Violence, an eight-week, cohort-based educational program from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays, starting Sept. 17. Participants will learn strategies to create a safer campus culture free of sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. A free dinner will be provided at each session, and those who complete the program will receive a microcredential.

- Come out to Recess: Self-Care Edition to learn alternate ways to engage in self-care as a part of National Suicide Prevention Week. The event is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12, and will feature yard games, giveaways, food trucks, goat yoga and more.
- Fam Fest, part of Fall Family Weekend, is taking place from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 13. Enjoy food trucks, connections with campus partners and local businesses, free swag, games, music, raffle prizes and more!
- The College of Health and Human Services is hosting a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
