Eli Lilly and Company Supports Students

Charlotte leaders, students and Eli Lilly and Company representatives recently celebrated the newly renovated William States Lee College of Engineering Industrial Solutions Lab, powered by Lilly, in Cameron Hall. The grand opening also marked the beginning of a new partnership with Lilly to support engineering students.

What you need to know: Faculty and Staff

  • Virtual Town Halls: Register for two upcoming virtual town halls: Guidelines for Free Expression on Campus at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, and Understanding the System’s New Equality Policy at 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 23. The events are presented in partnership with the Divisions of Institutional Integrity, Academic Affairs and Student Affairs and the Office of Safety and Security.
  • Mandatory Training: Title IX and IT Security training for all University faculty and staff will be issued Monday, Sept. 16. You will receive an email to access the mandatory training modules through the Learning and Development Portal, and employees will have 45 days to complete the assigned training.
  • Personal Identification Policy: To maintain an open campus that is safe and secure, authorized University employees need to be able to identify individuals on University property. The University’s Personal Identification Policy states that no individual on University property may wear a mask or other device that disguises their person, face or voice in order to conceal their identity unless permitted under N.C. General Statute 14-12.11. In addition, all UNC Charlotte employees and students are required to carry their Charlotte 49er ID Card (either physical or mobile) or other form of government-issued identification (e.g., driver’s license) with them at all times while on University property, and may be asked to present that identification by authorized University officials.
  • New Ranking: Charlotte ranks No. 9 in the U.S. for promoting free expression.

Event Spotlight

Aetna Bus

The Aetna Bus will be on campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the CHHS/COED Plaza. Faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by to ask Aetna representatives questions about the transition to the new state health plan third-party administrator, including the ability to look up providers, and the opportunity to receive a flu shot on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Core Series Talk: Register for urbanCORE’s talk with Kendra Jason, associate professor of sociology, and Roger Suclupe, clinical assistant professor in the School of Social Work, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Sycamore Building, Room 306. They will share how they co-designed a wellness incubator with Hidden Valley community members and partners.
  • International Speaker Series: The Office of International Programs will host noted historian Talmadge Boston at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the Popp Martin Student Union, Room 340. Boston will explore themes from his book “How the Best Did It, Leadership Lessons from Our Top Presidents” and discuss presidential foreign policy and the foreign policy goals of current candidates.
  • 49er Mart Virtual Forum: 49er Mart users are invited to attend a virtual forum from 2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 26. Registration is encouraged on the Learning and Development Portal, and more information can be found on the 49er Mart message board.
  • Deadline Approaching: There are four days remaining to submit faculty project descriptions for the spring 2025 Office of Undergraduate Research Academic Year Research Program.
  • Suggest a Student: The Emerging Leaders program is seeking first-time, first-year students who are committed to getting involved on campus and growing as individuals and who want to meet other new students. Faculty and staff can suggest students for the program by filling out this form by Friday, Sept. 20. Please contact Mikala Harvey with questions.
  • AI Faculty Fellow: Applications are open for the Center for Teaching and Learning 2024-25 AI faculty fellow position. Apply by Tuesday, Oct. 1; the faculty fellow will serve from Nov. 1 through May 15.
  • Generative AI in Teaching and Learning: Discover how to utilize generative AI in teaching and learning with faculty and instructional professionals across the UNC System during the 2024-25 learning community. For more details and to apply, visit this webpage.
  • Voter Engagement Recognition: UNC Charlotte was recognized by the ALL IN Democracy Challenge for its nonpartisan democratic engagement efforts that fostered high levels of student voter engagement in the 2022 midterm elections.
  • International Education Week: International Education Week is Nov. 18-22, and the Office of International Programs will hold a campus celebration showcasing food, music, dance, language and film from around the world. Faculty and staff may request funding and submit related events for inclusion in the calendar and publications by Friday, Oct. 18.

  • Emerging Leaders is a UNC Charlotte tradition that offers a select group of first-year, first-time students the opportunity to develop leadership skills, while making friends and having a great time. Students can apply to join before Monday, Sept. 30.
  • Starting Monday, Sept. 16, all student employees are required to complete the IT security training through the Learning and Development Portal.
  • Do you want to learn more about effective strategies to safely intervene and support individuals exhibiting problematic alcohol use? Sign up for the “Safer Drinking: Bystander Intervention” workshop scheduled for 4 p.m., Monday, Sept. 23.

Student Veterans

Charlotte’s Military and Veteran Services Office partnered with the Student Veterans of America – 49ers and Air Force ROTC Detachment 592 for an annual memorial event honoring lives lost Sept. 11, 2001. Members of the military community united for a challenging workout to remember those lost as they took the opportunity to live life to the fullest.
