Felix Fiifi Ekuful, a master’s student in construction and facilities engineering, embodies the spirit of innovation and collaboration that resonates with the University. A graduate student’s journey often intersects with pivotal real-world experiences that shape their professional trajectory. For Ekuful, his summer internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory was a transformative chapter.

Choosing UNC Charlotte

For Ekuful, selecting a graduate school was more than academics; it was about finding a community that supports and inspires.

“When I was selecting a graduate program, it was crucial for me to find a university that not only aligned with my career goals but also fostered an environment of innovation and collaboration,” said Ekuful, who found a mentor in Weimin Wang, associate professor of mechanical engineering technology.

“Dr. Wang’s mentorship has provided me with invaluable insights and guidance that I deeply appreciate,” he said.

Internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Working at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Building Technologies Research and Integration Center, a leading hub for innovative solutions in building technology and energy efficiency, Ekuful gained exposure to cutting-edge research and collaboration with top experts.

“The experience solidified my passion for driving meaningful change in energy efficiency and confirmed my commitment to leading advancements in sustainable building technologies,” he said. “This role allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, analyzing the cost-effectiveness and impact of various energy-saving strategies.”

Ekuful attributes much of his preparedness for the internship to the comprehensive graduate program at UNC Charlotte and the support from Wang.

His three major takeaways from his time at Oak Ridge National Laboratory: networking opportunities, practical application of theory and professional growth.

His journey at UNC Charlotte and at his internship truly highlight the University’s role in shaping future leaders in the field of construction and facilities engineering. Ekuful is a great example of how important a supportive academic community and real-world experiences can be.
