Happy Campus Sustainability Month!

Campus Sustainability Month is underway at UNC Charlotte. Throughout October there will be special events highlighting Charlotte’s commitment to sustainability. In today’s special edition of Niner Insider we’ll catch you up on what’s been happening around campus, preview what’s to come and spotlight Charlotte community members and initiatives that are making a difference.

Student Sustainability Summit ♻️

Student Sustainability Summit

Students learned how to make positive environmental changes on campus from the Office of Sustainability, networked with SGA representatives and brainstormed solutions at this year’s Student Sustainability Summit.

Transportation Fair 🛴🚍🚲

Students, faculty and staff were introduced to sustainable forms of transportation on campus including Lime micromobility scooters, bikes and more at the ninth annual Transportation Fair hosted by the Office of Sustainability and PaTS.

Botanical Gardens Fall Plant Sale 🪴

A wide selection of native and non-native hardy shrubs, trees, perennials, wildflowers, ferns and cool weather annuals were on sale for the UNC Charlotte community and the public at the Botanical Gardens.

  • ♻️Drone’s-Eye View Event: See campus from a drone’s perspective, and learn how UNC Charlotte Parking and Transportation Services Office uses drones to collect information for campus planning from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, at Union Deck.
  • ♻️Campus Beautification Day: Open to all students, staff, faculty and alumni, Campus Beautification Day volunteers will plant trees, collect litter and assist with other beautification projects from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday Oct. 16, beginning near the Gage Undergraduate Admissions Center and Lot 8. Refreshments, tools and gloves will be provided.
  • ♻️Charlotte Harvest Exchange: The Levine Scholars, in partnership with The Bulb, will host a farmer’s market, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Belk Plaza, offering UNC Charlotte students fresh local produce.
  • ♻️Crafting Joy with Sustainable Decorations Workshop: Craft sustainable and reusable decorations for your upcoming celebrations from 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Area 49 Makerspace in Atkins Library. Fabric, cardboard and other material will be provided, or bring your own materials to upcycle.

Faculty and Staff Promote a Culture of Sustainability through Ambassadors Program

Forty employees participated in the Sustainability Ambassadors program’s inaugural cohort in 2023-24 and were recognized recently for their efforts at a campus celebration. Find out how they are making a difference within their departments and beyond.
