Meet Princela Flores
Princela Flores, a junior in the Honors College, is majoring in communications with a focus on public relations. As a first-generation student and daughter of parents from El Salvador, she has built a strong support system on campus, immersing herself in clubs, honors societies and her sorority. She is dedicated to making her mother proud and pushes herself to grow, with the support of the University’s transition and success initiatives.
Based on your experiences, what advice would you give to other first-gen students just starting their college journey?
Get involved! College is what you make of it. I would not be the person I am today if I hadn’t immersed myself in the Charlotte community. You will find your home away from home; you just have to go out and search for it.
What aspect of being a first-gen student are you most proud of, and what do you consider your biggest achievement so far?
I am incredibly proud of where I am today! When I started college, I was uncertain about my future and what I wanted to do. Now, as the daughter of immigrants, I can confidently say that I understand my goals. One of my biggest academic achievements has been my involvement in various clubs, honor societies and my sorority. I feel fortunate to be part of the Honors College, honor societies like Tri-Alpha and clubs such as First-Gen Niners. Additionally, becoming a cat mom has taught me so much about responsibility and love!
Are there specific resources at UNC Charlotte or elsewhere that you think all first-gen students should know about?
The staff in the Transition and Success Initiatives Department has greatly assisted me and provided numerous opportunities.
What motivates you to keep pushing forward during tough times?
My mom has always been my biggest supporter. Earning my bachelor’s degree isn’t just for me; it’s also a way to honor the sacrifices she has made for me. I am constantly reminded that achieving this goal is important not only for my own future but also for her.
Can you share a lesson you’ve learned that you wish you’d known in your first year?
Talk to your professors! They are here to support you and genuinely want you to succeed. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your professors and teaching assistants, they are there to help you. College can be intimidating, but remember that no one wants you to fail. Reach out for assistance when you need it.
If you could pick a song that best represents your college experience, what would it be and why?
I resonate with the song “Simple” by Kali Uchis because the lyrics express that my heart has always been in the right place. College has not been easy for me, but I am very grateful for the challenges I have faced and the lessons I have learned. I believe in not overcomplicating things; everything will work out for a reason!
