Myra George, director of strategic planning and assessment with the Office of Assessment and Accreditation, died Sunday, Dec. 8.

George, who joined UNC Charlotte in May 2022, provided leadership for University strategic planning and academic program reviews and supported faculty and staff in utilizing assessment findings for continuous improvement.

A graduate of Bennett College, George earned a master’s degree in English from The Ohio State University; her doctorate in community college leadership was from Ferris State University in Michigan.

Christine Robinson, assistant provost for institutional effectiveness and analytics, said, “Dr. Myra George always challenged us to think, which at times frustrated us and made us uncomfortable. She used her in-depth conversations as teachable moments, helping us to grow beyond our miseducation and long-held beliefs. We will forever miss our incredibly intelligent, thoughtful, generous, supportive colleague and dear friend.”

Prior to joining UNC Charlotte, George was a faculty member in the English Department at Milwaukee Area Technical College, where she was faculty chair for the 2021-25 strategic plan and divisional assessment chair.

George expressed a desire that at least six months pass before a memorial service is held. In lieu of flowers to the family, donations can be made to charities she supported as a lifetime member: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ozaukee County and the NAACP of Ozaukee County. Also, family and friends have established a scholarship fund at Milwaukee Area Technical College to honor and remember George’s extraordinary life and support future students in her honor.
