Art history professor named associate dean for research
Jae Emerling is the new associate dean for research in the College of Arts + Architecture. This three-year appointment was effective with the start of the spring 2025 semester.
As associate dean for research, Emerling will support the college’s research initiatives (both graduate and undergraduate) and the strategic pursuit of research and extramural funding. In consultation with the college’s dean, José Gámez, Emerling will develop, establish and lead research policies, procedures, programs/initiatives and goals.
In this effort, he will work closely with the Division of Research; support interdisciplinary grant initiatives (such as ArtXSci); seek new arts research opportunities; and recruit, convene and support current and future researchers and research teams within the College of Arts + Architecture. Additionally, he will serve as the liaison and administrative advisor to the college’s research centers and labs.
Emerling, a professor of modern and contemporary art history, is the author of three books: “Theory for Art History,” “Photography: History and Theory” and “Transmissibility: Writing Aesthetic History.” His work has appeared in the Journal of Visual Culture, History of Photography, Radical Philosophy, CAA Reviews and the Journal of Art Historiography.
