Faklaris knows homeowners association data could be a gold mine for cybercriminals hoping to secure people’s personal information and then steal their identities. Her research has shown people are especially vulnerable when scammers make their targeted messages look like they’re coming from an authority or someone in a position of power.

“Somebody makes it look like it’s a legitimate communication because they seem to know an awful lot about you, and that’s very dangerous,” she said. “It’s very dangerous because we’re inclined to trust.”
