A clear path from classroom to career: The difference Charlotte makes

A bold commitment
UNC Charlotte is making a bold commitment to students: Before they graduate, every undergraduate can access an internship opportunity to help them build skills, connections and readiness. It’s an opportunity made possible by three things that set us apart: our location in one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities, our centralized career services and a wide range of options to fit every student’s life.
Location that opens doors
As the only public research university in North Carolina’s largest city, we’re connected to industries that fuel the economy: finance, technology, energy, health care, education, the arts and more.
“Graduating with a degree is essential,” said Provost Jennifer Troyer. “But pairing that degree with skills, confidence and proven experience is what sets our students apart. Our location in one of the nation’s fastest-growing and most dynamic cities means we can provide opportunities students simply can’t find anywhere else.”
One place to start
Through the UNC Charlotte Career Center, students in every major have a clear entry point to internships. This centralized approach makes it easier to see what’s available, navigate the application process and get the support needed to land an opportunity.
Career coaches help students identify the right fit, prepare resumes and practice interview skills, ensuring they’re ready to make the most of each opportunity.
Internship options for every student
Not every student needs the same experience. Whether it’s a semester-long placement, a short-term project, a virtual role or a paid gig that fits a busy schedule, we meet students where they are.
The Virtual Internship Program opens global opportunities for academic credit without the need to leave Charlotte, making internships accessible for those with work, family or financial constraints. The Gig Internship Program connects students to short-term, skill-specific projects with nonprofits or campus units — a first-of-its-kind model in the nation that lets students earn experience, a paycheck and a resume boost in as little as 40 hours.
Together, these options remove barriers and expand access, making sure every Niner can find an internship that works for them.
Making internships accessible and expected
“Internships shouldn’t be a lucky break,” said Patrick Madsen, associate dean of undergraduate education. “They should be an expectation. We’re building the systems, partnerships and support so every student can step into a professional setting before they graduate.”
More than 8,000 postings appear each year on Hire-A-Niner, with employers actively seeking Niner talent. Nationally, 57% of internships lead to full-time job offers, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. At Charlotte, they also lead to the confidence that comes from applying what you’ve learned in the real world.
The difference at Charlotte is clear: No matter your major, your schedule or your goals, you can graduate with internship experience and be ready to take on what’s next. Visit the Career Center to see how an internship can help you get there.
