Campus safety reminders
Every year, it’s important for all members of Niner Nation to familiarize themselves with the protocols and programs in place to help keep campus safe and healthy. From understanding NinerNotices vs. NinerAlerts to familiarizing yourself with the support resources available to students, faculty and staff, the information below can help you throughout your Charlotte journey.
New Initiatives and Reminders
- NinerReady: Being prepared is good practice for any emergency you may face, whether at school, work or a large event. Becoming NinerReady will help you no matter where you are.
- Building Access Changes: University building access schedules and procedures have changed. You may need your 49er ID card to access buildings.
- Identification: All UNC Charlotte employees and students are required to carry their Charlotte 49er ID Card (either physical or mobile) or other form of government-issued identification (e.g., driver’s license) with them at all times while on University property and may be asked to present that identification by authorized University officials.
- Active Assailant Response Training: Remember, all faculty, staff and students are required to complete online active assailant response training specific to our campus. Check the Learning and Development portal for the training link. Thank you to those who have already completed the training.
- Classroom Safety Toolkit: The Classroom Safety Toolkit provides the resources needed for students, faculty and staff to help prevent, prepare for and respond to emergency situations that may occur in a classroom setting.
- NinerNotice vs. NinerAlert: As a new semester has begun, it’s important to take a moment and learn how the University will contact you during an emergency situation or a disruption to campus operations. Learn more about NinerNotices and NinerAlerts, and how you should respond to either notification.
Personal Safety Tips
No matter where you are, it’s important to be mindful of your personal safety.
- Stay alert and attuned into your surroundings wherever you are.
- Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or situation and leave as soon as possible.
- If entering a building that is on “swipe-only” access, never allow someone you don’t know to enter behind you without also swiping their ID card for entry.
- Try to walk places with your friends rather than alone. You can also conduct a “safe walk” via the LiveSafe app.
- Be alert and report all suspicious activity. You can call Campus Police at 704-687-2200, report on the LiveSafe app or via the form on this website.
- Always park in well-lit areas, if possible.
- Lock your room and vehicle when you leave them, and if you can’t take an item, hide or cover it.
Light Rail Safety
The University police department patrols the UNC Charlotte Main Station light rail platform. University police officers and rangers are also present at the Dubois Center and Co-Lab, frequently checking the 9th Street light rail platform during their patrols. Additionally the University maintains strong working relationships with CMPD and CATS, staying in close communication to receive updates and align on changes that impact safety near our campus.
Additionally, CATS and the City of Charlotte announced several systemwide safety enhancements:
- Increased police patrols from CMPD on transit property.
- Redeployment of security staff across Blue Line stations.
- More frequent fare inspections to deter unauthorized access.
- Hiring additional security personnel.
- Deployment of mobile security units (bike units and urban terrain vehicles) within weeks.
- Proposed expansion of CATS’ security authority, pending Charlotte City Council approval Sept. 22.
