Metzgar, an economics professor at UNC Charlotte, said the move was needed, as the penny had become nearly obsolete. “It cost about 3.7 cents to make a penny, which is obviously only worth $0.01. And so I think in 2024, they lost maybe $85 million producing the penny,”
