Matthew Metzgar quoted in ‘Charlotte business weighs in as U.S. officially ends penny production’

Metzgar, an economics professor at UNC Charlotte, said the move was needed, as the penny had become nearly obsolete. “It cost about 3.7 cents to make a penny, which is obviously only worth $0.01. And so I think in 2024, they lost maybe $85 million producing the penny,”
