Eric Heberlig provided comments for ‘Democratic candidates launch ‘protest campaigns’ to challenge GOP incumbents in upcoming primaries’

According to Eric Heberlig, a political science professor at UNC Charlotte, protest candidates have historically been relatively rare. While recent political changes may make them more common, protest candidates still face an uphill battle in today’s primaries.
“Running as a candidate who used to be registered for the other party is not a selling point with those voters because they’re looking for a loyalist, not somebody who’s suspicious because they used to be from the other political party,” he said.
