UNC Charlotte Announces Seventh Cohort of Gambrell Faculty Fellows

Ten UNC Charlotte faculty members have been selected for the seventh cohort of the Charlotte Urban Institute’s Gambrell Faculty Fellowship, an 18‑month initiative supported by The Gambrell Foundation. Their work will advance innovative scholarship aimed at strengthening the well‑being of individuals and communities across the Charlotte region and beyond.

The fellows represent five colleges and a wide range of disciplines:

  • Cato College of Education: Dania Fakhro, Kristie Opiola
  • College of Arts + Architecture: Nathaniel Elberfeld, Tamara Williams
  • College of Health and Human Services: Dante Bryant, Braveheart Gillani
  • College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences / School of Data Science: Helen Davies, Marianna B. Ganapini, Sijia Qian
  • William States Lee College of Engineering: Carlos Gonzalez‑Calderon

Their projects explore topics such as the health impacts of transportation systems, new approaches to designing the built environment and strategies to inspire awe and strengthen connection among men in caring professions, among others

Since 2019, the Gambrell Faculty Fellowship has engaged 59 researchers, thinkers and doers across 27 disciplines, generating 36 influential projects that deepen understanding of Charlotte’s challenges and opportunities. This new cohort continues that momentum, advancing UNC Charlotte’s role as a leader in urban research and regional impact.
