UNC Charlotte adopts digital accessibility policy to align with ADA standards

Categories: Faculty/Staff Tags: Academic Affairs

The ADA requires that state and local governments provide individuals with disabilities with effective communication, reasonable modifications and an equal opportunity to participate in or benefit from their services, programs, and activities. While this requirement is not new, all public entities—including UNC Charlotte—are required to adopt the WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility technical standards by April 24, 2026.

These technical standards provide specific guidelines for features like video captions and screen reader capability. On Feb. 3, 2026, Chancellor Gaber approved University Policy 319: Accessibility of Web Content and Mobile Applications to ensure compliance with the current federal regulations.

Why this matters

With the launch of University Policy 319 and its supplemental procedures, the University adopted the required technical standard and continues to improve the digital accessibility framework for its services, programs, and activities. With our combined efforts, the University will continue advancing beyond compliance toward a broader culture of care, recognizing accessibility as a core component of effective teaching and learning.

April is Accessibility Awareness Month at UNC Charlotte

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in Accessibility Awareness Month, a new initiative designed to connect policy to practice. Throughout April, the University will offer practical, low‑barrier supports to help instructors make immediate, meaningful improvements to their digital course materials. The goal is to strengthen our shared commitment to accessible learning experiences for all students.
