Kennedy Building Stair Replacement Project Update

Work continues on the stair replacement project at the Kennedy Building. As part of that project, the tulip canopy above the stairs must be removed.

Over many decades, water runoff from the canopy contributed to significant deterioration of the stairs beneath it. The canopy has to be removed to complete the replacement project, and it cannot be preserved in a manner that would allow for reinstallation. Recreating the original design would also likely recreate the same drainage issues.

Recognizing the canopy’s significance as a campus landmark and its appearance in the University’s seal, Facilities Management completed a digital scan of the structure before its removal. The scan preserves the canopy digitally and will help inform the exploration of future commemorative, interpretive or artistic options.

The stair replacement project is expected to be completed later this year, and additional information about options for the canopy will be shared as it becomes available.
