UNC System Board of Governors Highlights July 2026
The UNC System Board of Governors (BOG) convened in special session July 23, 2026. Below is a summary of the reports shared with the board and actions taken by the board.
Note: Any business conducted by the Board of Governors in closed session is not included in this summary.
Committee on Budget and Finance
- State budget and FY 2027 budget updates: The committee received presentations on the 2026 Short Session State Budget and the FY 2027 All-Funds Budget.
- Operating budget approved: Members approved the 2026-27 Operating Budget Allocations.
- Capital and financing actions approved: The committee approved authorization for UNC Chapel Hill to use special obligation bond commercial paper financing, along with four new capital projects and six increased project authorizations across the UNC System.
- Informational reports received: Trustees reviewed the FY 2027 All-Funds Budget Report, the July 2026 Quarterly Capital Report and the annual Report on Need-Based Aid from Tuition.
Committee on Educational Planning, Policies and Programs
- New academic program approved: Through the consent agenda, the board approved establishment of a Bachelor of Social Work at UNC Chapel Hill.
Committee on University Governance
- UNC Charlotte trustee appointment approved: Members approved the appointment of Jonathan “Jon” Ward ’94 to the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees to complete a partial term ending June 30, 2027, held by Hugh McColl.
- Additional appointments approved: The committee also approved appointments and reappointments to the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission, PBS North Carolina Board of Trustees, UNC Asheville Board of Trustees and UNC Press Board of Governors.
- Malcolm Butler, dean of the Cato College of Education, was reappointed to the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission.
