UNC Charlotte’s 80th anniversary takes root with oak trees across the county
UNC Charlotte is marking its 80th anniversary, celebrating eight decades of growth from a 278‑student postwar college to a top‑100 public RI University. Niner Nation kicked off the milestone with an oak tree planting at the Gage Undergraduate Admissions Center, the first step in a countywide tribute that will include 80 oak trees planted across Mecklenburg County in partnership with TreesCharlotte.
Breaking ground and building a legacy
Displayed in the Harris Alumni Center is a shovel tied to a defining moment in UNC Charlotte’s history. Bonnie Cone — “Miss Bonnie” to the generations she inspired — used it on Nov. 21, 1960, when more than 200 people gathered to break ground on Charlotte College’s new campus. Exactly where that shovel struck the earth has been lost to time, but its impact is unmistakable. The first two buildings constructed on the new site — Kennedy and Macy — still stand more than six decades later.
