Meet Emma Miller: Dancing into the spotlight

A dancer for nearly her entire life, Emma Miller is currently sharing her passion with audiences far beyond the studio. The sophomore dance major is gaining attention on TikTok for energetic dance videos that reach viewers around the world.

While building an online following, Miller continues to develop her technique and explore new styles through Charlotte’s dance program in the College of Arts + Architecture. In this Q&A, she shares how her love for dance began, what it’s been like to gain recognition on campus and online and why she encourages other students to confidently share their creativity. 

When did you first start dancing, and when did you realize it was something you wanted to pursue as a major/profession?

I started dancing when I was 3. When I moved from New York to North Carolina at 6 , I realized how much I loved it. Sixteen years later, that love for dance has never gone away. 

What made you choose to study dance at UNC Charlotte?

At UNC Charlotte, I have the opportunity to build my technique and expand my experience across different styles of dance.

What has your experience in UNC Charlotte’s dance program been like so far? 

I’ve been learning new movements that I didn’t have much experience with at my previous dance studio, so they’ve been more challenging to master. 

When did you first start posting dance videos on TikTok, and what inspired you to share your dancing online? 

I started posting regularly on TikTok when it transitioned from Musical.ly. Seeing other people share their dancing on TikTok inspired me to start posting and showcase my own talent.

How has going viral changed the way you think about social media or your future as a dancer? 

When I first started posting on TikTok, I felt like people weren’t engaging with my videos because they were judging my dancing. Over time, I realized people were drawn to the energy and effort I put into my videos.

What has been the most surprising part of gaining a larger audience online? 

The most surprising part of gaining a larger audience online is realizing that my videos are reaching people not just in North Carolina, but around the world.

What do you love about UNC Charlotte?

It makes me happy when people come up to me asking for pictures or wanting to make TikToks together. I love seeing people have fun with my content while also being able to learn and grow at UNC Charlotte.

What advice would you give other students who want to share their creativity online but might be nervous to put themselves out there? 

Never listen to people who try to bring you down. Keep doing what you love and posting what makes you happy. The best way to prove them wrong is to keep going and never let the negativity stop you.
