Charlotte Lifters Club powers up crowdfunding campaign to support student athletes
For the Charlotte Lifters Club, strength goes beyond the weight room. The student-led organization is raising more than $2,500 to purchase specialized equipment and help its athletes compete on the regional and national stages, all while building a community rooted in teamwork, belonging and a shared passion for powerlifting. The crowdfunding campaign has already gained momentum, with the club reaching 40% of its fundraising goal in less than a week.
Although powerlifting is traditionally an individual sport, the Charlotte Lifters Club is proving that success is stronger when achieved together.
The organization provides UNC Charlotte students with opportunities to compete against club and varsity-level teams from universities across the country. Beyond competition, the club emphasizes personal growth, meaningful connections and creating an environment where every member feels supported.
“Powerlifting is an individual sport but despite this, we make it our mission to provide competitors an environment to grow internally and within the sport,” said Alan Guzman, a junior finance and accounting major and club president. “In the end, what you take away from your time on the team is the connections you have made and the impact they create.”
Raising the bar through crowdfunding

The funds will help the organization purchase specialized competition equipment. These additions will allow members to train with the same equipment used at official competitions, helping them better prepare for regional and national meets.
Any remaining funds will support travel expenses for athletes who qualify for those competitions, making it easier for students to represent UNC Charlotte on a larger stage.
For the Charlotte Lifters, reaching their goal means more than purchasing equipment. It also represents an opportunity to establish lasting relationships with supporters and create a foundation for future fundraising efforts.
“Fundraising helps us reduce some financial barriers that are associated with the sport and allows us to invest directly in our members and their goals,” said Ava Faugno, a senior finance major and club treasurer.
Building strength on and off the platform
Since beginning competition within its federation, the Charlotte Lifters Club has sent athletes to compete on the national stage each year.
Those accomplishments reflect the dedication of its members and the organization’s commitment to providing opportunities for students to compete at a high level.
Unlike many traditional student organizations, the club gives students access to competitive powerlifting against both club and varsity teams, offering an experience that combines individual achievement with team strategy and support.
More than a team

While competition brings members together, the relationships they build are what make the Charlotte Lifters Club special.
The organization strives to create a welcoming environment where students can develop friendships, strengthen their confidence and encourage one another to succeed both inside and outside the gym.
As the club works toward its crowdfunding goal, its members hope the Charlotte community will recognize the impact their support can have, not only on the team’s competitive success but also on the students who find a home within the organization.
“I hope that people can recognize that we are more than just a powerlifting team,” said Guzman. “Behind what we do, we are a group of extremely passionate people that are dedicated to not only themselves, but to helping their teammates and encouraging them to be the best version of themselves in every part of their lives.”
