Obie Nelson named Charlotte 49ers’ director of student-athlete development
Krystion Obie Nelson ’05, M.A. ’11 is the director of student-athlete development for the Charlotte 49ers. Obie Nelson, who played for the 49ers women’s basketball team from 2002-06 and served as an assistant coach from 2007-10, has been an instructor, advisor, lecturer and interim director in the University’s American Studies program since 2012.
In this new role, she will oversee the development of student-athletes through career and personal development, community service and outreach activities, life skills programming and leadership opportunities. She will serve as institutional and conference SAAC advisor for Charlotte Athletics.
After completing Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and Africana Studies in 2005, Obie Nelson earned a master’s degree in history in 2011.
“Krystion could not be better suited for this position,” said Associate Athletic Director Scott Byrd. “She’s played here, coached here and taught here — but most importantly, she’s been extremely active and engaged at every step. Her unique experience and skill set makes her the perfect fit. We’re excited to have her working on behalf of our student-athletes.”
Obie Nelson said, “Charlotte holds a special place in my heart and I know the opportunities I was afforded — both on and off the court — have helped me throughout my career. I have so much pride in this institution, in this department and in the experiences we provide our student-athletes. My coaching and teaching careers have been student-focused, and I look forward to maintaining that focus while working with our incredible athletes as they matriculate toward graduation and help prepare them for what’s next.”
