Spring 2020 Faculty & Friends Concerts scheduled

The Department of Music opens the spring 2020 semester with three Faculty & Friends Concerts. The first, on Monday, Jan. 27, features Assistant Professor of Oboe Elizabeth Sullivan with Trio Village. Created with flutist Rebecca Johnson and pianist Cara Chowning, Trio Village champions the music of women and other underrepresented composers as well as discovering older works that are not standard to the chamber music canon. Their program at UNC Charlotte will reflect that mission, including a delightful set of pieces by the African American composer William Grant Still that are based on hymns and folksongs and music by three female composers.

Assistant Professor of Voice Sequina DuBose will perform the second Faculty & Friends concert on Monday, Feb. 3, with guest pianist Gregory Thompson. A lyric soprano whose research focuses on 21st century opera, DuBose maintains an active performing career in many musical styles and genres, including musical theater and African American folk music. Her wide-ranging program on Feb. 3 includes contemporary settings of African American spirituals, art songs, arias from new operas and favorites such as Gershwin’s “Summertime,” Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday” and Harold Arlen’s “Stormy Weather.”

The spring 2020 Faculty & Friends Concert Series concludes Monday, Feb. 10, with a performance by Assistant Professor of Trombone Jeremy Marks and pianist Erin Palmer. The program will include original 20th century works for trombone and bass trombone as well as an arrangement of “Che gelida manina” from the opera “La Bohème.”

All performances take place in Rowe Recital Hall. Tickets are $10, $8 for students. Visit coaa.charlotte.edu for details.
