Campus community responds to #GivingTuesday
More than 1,000 National Guard members serving in Bosnia will get holiday greetings from UNC Charlotte as a result of the University’s #GivingTuesday event.
“UNC Charlotte’s founding was in part to serve veterans returning from World War II, so it was exciting to see so many students, faculty and staff members come together to support North Carolina National Guard members who will be serving overseas during the holidays,” said Shayna Long, assistant director of annual giving in the Division of University Advancement.
In addition to the approximately 1,100 cards signed at the three #GivingTuesday locations around campus, officials with the Charlotte Engineering Early College requested holiday cards for its students to sign notes of appreciation to the troops.
#GivingTuesday is a national movement to encourage philanthropy during the holidays. To benefit veteran students on campus, organizers created a Crowdfund UNC Charlotte project to raise $2,000 to purchase 10 smart pens for the Office of Veteran Students Services.
At press time, 63 donors had contributed $1,076 toward this fundraising effort.
“Members of the Niner Nation and the greater community are very generous, and it’s very gratifying to know so many have supported this crowdfunding project,” Long stated. “It’s these individual efforts that when combined can have a significant impact.”
