Campus liaisons needed for Levine Scholars 2025 National Outdoor Leadership School
Interested in joining Levine Scholars on their 2025 National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Expedition in the Wind River Wilderness of Wyoming?
The Levine Scholars Program is seeking one or two UNC Charlotte staff or faculty members to volunteer as campus liaisons to accompany the incoming class of scholars on a 23-day expedition with the National Outdoor Leadership School during summer 2025.
Campus liaisons travel with the scholars on the round-trip flight from Charlotte to Lander, Wyoming, and are full participants on the backpacking expedition led by NOLS staff. The trip is scheduled for Sunday, July 5, through Friday, Aug. 1. The Levine Scholars Program covers travel expenses and the costs required for participation in the expedition. This is considered a voluntary opportunity, outside the scope of employment duties at UNC Charlotte; therefore, liaisons will need to complete an acknowledgement and liability release for volunteers and unpaid interns upon appointment.
Primary responsibilities of the liaison:
- Provide support to the scholars as they participate in NOLS
- Serve as a resource as scholars prepare to start as Levine Scholars
Ideal liaisons will:
- Be a role model going outside one’s comfort zone, embracing new challenges and recognize the balance between learning and failing
- Be an ideal expedition participant (NOLS staff are the leaders) – ready to hike long days, be vulnerable and ask for help when needed
- Encourage scholars to transfer their learning from NOLS to home, school and beyond
Requirements for the liaisons include:
- Full-time employment at UNC Charlotte
- Working knowledge of academic programs across the University
- High level of familiarity with the student culture on campus, including both academic and extracurricular opportunities available to undergraduates
The Levine Scholars Program is especially interested in campus representatives who are excited to establish an ongoing mentoring relationship with the scholars. To apply for a liaison position, submit a letter of interest and resume by end of day Tuesday, March 25, to Heather Smith (heatsmit@charlotte.edu), LSP faculty director.
