Building the Future from the Stands:
The $1.7 Million Legacy of Ken Braswell
For 37 years, a familiar face could be found in the stands of nearly every Charlotte 49ers athletic event. Whether it was the intensity of a soccer match, the fast-paced action of basketball or the strategic play of his beloved softball, Ken Braswell ’72 was a constant presence.
While some assumed he was a staff member, Braswell was something even more foundational: a devoted alumnus and a "Super-Fan" who believed that building a great university started with showing up. The Charlotte 49ers family recently said goodbye to this fixture of our community when Braswell passed away, leaving behind a legacy that is now a permanent part of the university’s architecture.
A Charlotte native, Braswell earned his Master’s degree in Mathematics from UNC Charlotte before embarking on a successful 31-year career with United Parcel Service (UPS). Though he retired from UPS, he never truly retired from the 49ers. His life was a unique tapestry of interests, from the complex logic of mathematics to the competitive grace of ballroom dancing where he won numerous competitions in the 1980s and 90s. Yet his greatest and most enduring passion was the success of the student-athletes he cheered for every single season.

The Mathematics of Generosity
As one of the top 10 historical donors to the Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation, Braswell understood that impact is measured in more than just numbers, it’s measured in opportunities. Despite his significant contributions, he never wanted a "fuss" made over him. He was known for his dry wit, his honesty and a humility that defined his philanthropy.
In 2011, when he established an endowed scholarship for female student-athletes, he chose to step out of the spotlight. Rather than naming the fund after himself, he named it the Bonnie E. Cone Athletic Scholarship to honor the university’s founder and his own mentor. To Braswell, the mission was always bigger than the individual. He had a particular heart for women’s sports, ensuring that the next generation of female leaders had the resources to compete at the highest level.
A Full-Circle Performance
This past October, Braswell visited campus for the dedication of the Bob Daughtridge Softball Clubhouse — what would become his final visit to campus. During that visit, he spent a quiet half-hour talking with the current recipient of his scholarship, pitcher Brooke Bowling. It was a poignant final chapter: an alumnus who had spent decades building the university seeing that impact reflected in the eyes of a student-athlete.

For the Love of Charlotte
Braswell’s commitment to UNC Charlotte didn’t end with his passing; it was merely transformed. He left a staggering $1.7 million legacy gift to the institution he loved, a final act of devotion to ensure the programs he supported for nearly four decades continue to flourish.

“Ken believed in the 49ers and in where Charlotte is headed. He knew our stock is rising and was proud to be part of building that momentum.”
-Kevin White, Director of Athletics
As the university kicks off Niner Nation Gives, the annual 49-hour rally to support the causes Niners love most, it does so with Braswell’s spirit as a cornerstone. Braswell’s gift is being ignited to power our future. Every gift made during Niner Nation Gives directly benefits For the Love of Charlotte, the University’s $500 million campaign to transform academic and research leadership, student success and campus vibrancy.
Still Cheering from the Best Seat in the House
Braswell showed that you don’t need your name on a building to be the one who helped lay the bricks. He built Charlotte through 37 years of consistent giving, a career of hard work and an unwavering belief in the 49ers.
While his seat in the stands is now empty, his legacy is woven into the very fabric of the university. As Niner Nation comes together this week to support our future, we do so on a foundation made stronger by the life, the loyalty and the legacy of Ken Braswell.
