UNC Charlotte ranked No. 17 nationally for best value in higher education

UNC Charlotte continues to rise as one of the nation’s smartest investments in higher education, delivering exceptional quality, strong career outcomes and unmatched value for students and families.

SmartAsset ranked UNC Charlotte No. 17 nationally on its 2026 Best Value Public Universities list, placing Charlotte as the top public university in North Carolina. Appalachian State University followed at No. 25, and East Carolina University was No. 39.

SmartAsset’s annual analysis evaluates more than 500 colleges and universities, weighing the true cost of attendance — tuition, fees, books and living expenses — alongside graduation rates and median earnings a decade after enrollment. The results highlight which institutions truly deliver long‑term value.

UNC Charlotte’s strong performance reflects what Niners already know: the University offers an affordable, high‑quality education that launches graduates into meaningful careers. Charlotte, App State and ECU reported similar average annual costs of just over $23,000, yet Charlotte graduates earn among the highest median salaries in the group — from just above $51,000 to more than $57,000. Charlotte has a 68% graduation rate, while the other institutions have a 62% gradutaion rate.
