Niners guide to the Career Center resources

Categories: Students

With 87% of students finding jobs post-graduation at UNC Charlotte, the University is committed to helping students and alumni each step of the way.

The Career Center has a career coaching team and an industry specialist team with staff who work within designated communities, providing deeper insight into those areas. They want to ensure that students have access to more than just generic career-related resources, updates and trends.

“The job market right now is tough; we are still in an employer market, where they have more power than the job seeker, and hiring is down,” said Assistant Director of the Career Center, Sydney Gallup. “But things are not bleak; it just takes more energy and tenacity to nail down that first job.”

The Career Center offers numerous resources for achieving success:

Big Interview

An online interview practice program

Career Brand Toolkit

Students can finalize their résumé, learn how to talk with professionals, market their skills and create an action plan.

Career Guide

A 44-page guidebook to résumé writing, applying to graduate school, networking, how to dress and more.

Career meetups

Students can join 30-to 45-minute small-group sessions led by career coaches and industry professionals. These sessions focus on specific career and industry topics.

Coursera Career Academy

Free courses for students to build career competencies and earn credentials.

Forage

Immersive job simulations designed to build career-ready skills.

Hire-A-Niner

A website with internal and external job listings for current students and alumni. Students can join up to two career communities. In joining a community, students are granted access to the monthly emails and job blasts pertaining to those industries.

PathwayU

A platform tied to UNC Charlotte degree programs, where students can take assessments about career opportunities, explore different career paths and prepare for future jobs by learning about their skills. When a student completes all four parts, they are matched with roles and University programs of study that would be most suitable for them.

Professional Clothing Closet

Students can take home up to four professional pieces of clothing for free per semester to use for job interviews, career fairs, networking activities and more.

Vault

A platform that allows students to gain insider information about different industries, companies and careers. You’ll learn what it’s like to work with different employers, get career advice and view job postings.

Don’t have an appointment? If you need résumé feedback, a LinkedIn review or job search guidance, the Career Center offers drop-ins for a quick conversation that may answer a few of your questions or help get you started.

“If you are graduating this academic year, meet with a career coach to develop an action plan,” said Gallup. “It is okay if this is your first visit to our office; we want to get you started, and it’s never too late to see us.”

Many of the office’s services are available 24/7 via the website, and you can find recordings of their events on YouTube.
