Safety and Well-being Reminders
As a university in an urban setting, we want to remind all members of Niner Nation about the protocols, services and resources in place to help keep our campus community safe and healthy. From understanding NinerNotices and NinerAlerts to knowing how to report suspicious activity and access support, the information below can help you stay informed, prepared and connected to assistance when needed.
Safety Initiatives and Reminders
- NinerNotice vs. NinerAlert: As a new semester has begun, it’s important to take a moment and learn how the University will contact you during an emergency situation or a disruption to campus operations. Learn more about NinerNotices and NinerAlerts, and how you should respond to either notification.
- NinerReady: September is National Preparedness Month. Being prepared is good practice for any emergency you may face, whether at school, work or a large event. Becoming NinerReady will help you no matter where you are.
- Building Access: Familiarize yourself with the University building access schedules to know when you may need to use your 49er ID card to access buildings across campus.
- Identification: All UNC Charlotte employees and students are required to carry their Charlotte 49er ID Card (either physical or mobile) or other form of government-issued identification (e.g., driver’s license) with them at all times while on University property and may be asked to present that identification by authorized University officials. This is in adherence to University Policy 701.
- Active Assailant Response Training: All faculty, staff and students are required to complete online active assailant response training specific to our campus. Check the Learning and Development portal for the training link. Thank you to those who have already completed the training.
- Classroom Emergency Preparedness Toolkit: The Classroom Emergency Preparedness Toolkit provides the resources needed for students, faculty and staff to help prevent, prepare for and respond to emergency situations that may occur in a classroom setting.
- Lockdown Kits: Do you know how to use your classroom’s lockdown kit? Classrooms that do not lock or are not on swipe access are equipped with lockdown kits. The kits and instructions for use are most commonly located near the teaching podium or the classroom safety sign.
Personal Safety Tips
No matter where you are, it’s important to be mindful of your personal safety.
- Stay alert and attuned into your surroundings wherever you are.
- Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or situation and leave as soon as possible.
- If entering a building that is on “swipe-only” access, never allow someone you don’t know to enter behind you without also swiping their ID card for entry.
- Try to travel with your friends rather than alone. You can also conduct a “safe walk” via the LiveSafe app.
- Be alert and report all suspicious activity. You can call Campus Police at 704-687-2200, report on the LiveSafe app or via the form on this website.
- Always park in well-lit areas, if possible.
- Lock your room and vehicle when you leave them, and if you can’t take an item, hide or cover it.
Maintaining Your Well-Being
Your overall health and wellness matters too. Make sure you take advantage of the resources available to you.
- Student Health and Well-being: Taking care of your health is critical. The University has many resources to help support your physical and mental health needs, such as health and well-being, CAPS, the Student Health Center, the Center for Wellness Promotion, University Recreation and others.
- Employee Assistance Program: The Employee Assistance Program offers access to free, confidential counseling and resources on financial, legal and work-life matters.
- Preventative Immunization: The Student Health Center offers flu immunizations to students, faculty and staff. Register to attend one of the flu vaccine clinics this October or November.
