Make plans for a safe Halloween
Halloween is a chance to get creative, spend time with friends and enjoy the season. Whether you’re heading to a party, hosting a gathering or celebrating around campus, a little planning can help keep the weekend safe and fun for everyone.
As you finalize your costume and plans, keep these tips in mind:
- Choose a thoughtful costume: There are plenty of ways to be funny, clever or scary without making light of someone else’s culture, identity or experiences. Avoid costumes that turn tragedies, sexual misconduct or other serious issues into a joke.
- Plan your ride: Decide how you’ll get home before heading out. Arrange a designated driver, use a rideshare service or make another safe transportation plan. Never drive under the influence or ride with someone who is impaired.
- Look out for one another: Stay connected with friends throughout the evening, check in if plans change and help anyone who needs assistance. If someone appears to be in danger, seek help right away.
- Be responsible with alcohol: If you are 21 or older and choose to drink, know your limits and never pressure others to join you. If you’re concerned about someone who has been drinking, stay with them and get help.
- Respect consent and boundaries: A costume is never an invitation for unwanted attention or contact. Respect others’ boundaries and speak up or seek assistance if you see harassment or behavior that could put someone at risk.
- Host responsibly: If you’re planning a gathering, follow all applicable laws and University policies. Consider your guests’ safety, transportation options and the impact on your neighbors.
- Think before you post: Photos, videos and messages can travel well beyond their intended audience. Ask permission before sharing images of others and consider how your posts could affect you or someone else. Also consider how long images may exist on the internet and if you would want a future employer to see them.
- Respect your surroundings: Be aware of what’s happening around you, respect property and neighbors, and leave any situation where you feel unsafe.
However you celebrate, make choices that help you and those around you enjoy a safe weekend.
Happy Halloween, Niners!
