The North Carolina Council of IEEE and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are sponsoring the one-day event “RoboResearch” on Friday, March 6, on the Charlotte Research Institute campus.

This seminar will bring together leading experts in government, research and industry to advance the development of robotics in the state.

Steve Sabol, associate professor of history, will discuss Russia and the near abroad as the sixth speaker in the 2015 Great Decisions lecture series. This final presentation in the 2015 series will be at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18, at UNC Charlotte Center City.

“Educating Our Black Youth: A Community Responsibility” is the theme of a leadership summit scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

The Africana Studies Department and the Urban Education Collaborative, in partnership with the N.C. National Alliance of Black School Educators is conducting this event, which is free for UNC Charlotte faculty, staff and students. With the support of local industry that will benefit from its research capabilities, UNC Charlotte dedicated its new Siemens Energy Large Manufacturing Solutions Laboratory Feb. 9.

The staff of the Botanical Gardens will conduct an informative stroll through the Susie Harwood Garden from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 15.

As part of the event, Bruce Appeldoorn, owner of Appeldoorn Landscape Nursery, will give two presentations on dwarf conifers and offer a selection of hard-to-find dwarf conifers for sale. The Charlotte Camellia Society also will be on-site with a selection of winter-blooming Camellias for sale, including some favorites that individuals will see in the garden during the winter walk.

John Denti, orchid curator at the McMillan Greenhouse, will present the lunch and learn “Orchid Growing 101” at 12:15 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11, at McMillan Greenhouse.

Denti will demystify the care of these tropical plants by “breaking it down” to the most important factors for growing healthy orchids.

The University Botanical Gardens’ annual Valentine’s Day Orchid Sale will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday and Friday, Feb. 12-13, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 14, at the McMillan Greenhouse.

Three student teams from UNC Charlotte will compete this week at the 2015 University of North Carolina Social Entrepreneurship Conference.

Now in its third year, the UNC Social Entrepreneurship Conference engages students, faculty and entrepreneurs from across the state to identify North Carolina’s social problems and take a business-oriented approach to solve them.

UNC Charlotte will host a U.S. Department of State EducationUSA Leadership Institute Friday, Feb. 13, through Wednesday, Feb. 25. It will bring 15 educators to Charlotte to explore opportunities for capacity-building and international collaboration in the area of institutional structures to support inbound and outbound student mobility. 

UNC Charlotte is participating in Recyclemania, a national recycling competition and benchmarking tool. College and university programs use this event to promote waste reduction activities on their campuses.

During a 10-week period (Feb. 1 through April 4), schools report recycling and trash data; institutions are then ranked by the ones that collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, along with various other categories.
