Family Weekend postponed, football game to continue

The remnants of Hurricane Ian are projected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to Charlotte throughout the weekend. As a result, Family Weekend has been postponed to Nov. 4-5 to ensure families and students are able to enjoy the many outdoor activities planned for the celebration. Please note: While the Athletics Department continues to monitor the situation, the football game scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. will continue as planned. 

University to observe Campus Sustainability Week

This year’s Campus Sustainability Week is Oct. 2-8. This annual observance engages the University community in sustainable practices on campus through events and volunteer opportunities.

Architecture professor’s visualizations of air featured in exhibit

For nearly a decade, Catty Dan Zhang, an assistant professor of architecture, has been studying air as an important and active system in the design process.

An exhibition in Rhinebeck, New York, features tools and products of her investigations. “Pamphlet Architecture: Visions and Experiments in Architecture” at ‘T’ Space gallery presents works by the five finalists from the Pamphlet Architecture 37 open call, an international competition held last winter. 

Annual Fall Plant Sale scheduled

The UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens Fall Plant Sale will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7-8, in Parking Lot 5.

Fall typically is the best time to plant in this region in preparation for spring blooms. Sale attendees will find an outstanding selection of native and non-native hardy shrubs, trees, perennials, wildflowers, ferns and cool weather annuals at the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens Fall Plant Sale.

Accounting student organization named Southeast Chapter of the Year

UNC Charlotte’s National Association of Black Accountants chapter was named the 2022 Southeast Chapter of the Year. More than 130 chapters are based in the Southeast region.

Accounting student Clarence Newman, president of UNC Charlotte’s NABA chapter, said the recognition follows years of work to help members build their careers in business and connect with recruiters.

“One of the biggest achievements for our chapter was getting 100% of our graduating seniors jobs at top companies, such as Deloitte, Dell and Bank of America,” he said.

Diane Zablotsky to step down as faculty director of the Levine Scholars Program

Diane Zablotsky, faculty director of the Levine Scholars Program since 2010, has announced her intention to step down as faculty director at the end of the academic year. Zablotsky will return as a faculty member to the Department of Sociology. 

UNC Charlotte receives 2022 HEED Award for diversity, equity and inclusion efforts

UNC Charlotte has been recognized among the best in the nation for its outstanding diversity and inclusion efforts. The University is a recipient of the 2022 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Sharing the loss of Larry Mellichamp

Thomas Lawrence Mellichamp ’70, former director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, died Sept. 12.

A professor emeritus in the Biology Department, Mellichamp retired in 2014 after nearly four decades directing the development of the University’s Botanical Gardens. He completed a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University and went on to earn a doctorate in botany from the University of Michigan before returning to join the Charlotte faculty in 1976.
