Wayne Joseph Maikranz, known to many as a mentor, student advocate and valued colleague, died Sept. 27 at age 63.

In July 2023, a new law went into effect in North Carolina requiring UNC System institutions to remain neutral on any political controversies.

Thanksgiving in Canada is celebrated on the first Monday in October. I thought it would be great to get together with other UNC Charlotte Canadians this year to celebrate. And, it just so happened that Thanksgiving coincided with Niner Niner Nation Week and the faculty and staff social at the Wine Vault. We all had a great time, celebrating our culture and our University.

Asha Ellison has been named director of research translation and engagement for the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute, part of urbanCORE, a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs. Her official start date was Monday, Sept. 18.

Rebeca Rippy, Cato College of Education, needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through Oct. 18.

The University is currently upgrading the outdoor warning sirens used to alert the campus community of dangerous situations. During the next couple of weeks, the sirens will not be functional; however, all other means of emergency alerting remain in working order.

The 2023 Fall Commencement ceremonies will take place in Halton Arena on Friday, Dec. 15, and Saturday, Dec. 16.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion continues to respond to the expressed interests of students, faculty and staff to connect with ideas, discussions and learning opportunities surrounding issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

A highlight of commencement is the recognition of individuals for exceptional and distinctive service to the University or the greater community through the awarding of an honorary degree from UNC Charlotte. The Nominations, Honors and Awards Committee is seeking assistance in nominating persons for this honor.

Stacie Young ’98, senior director of donor relations, has spent her entire adult life at UNC Charlotte. This November, she’ll celebrate 25 years as a staff member.

Anne Cooper Moore, dean of Atkins Library, has announced she will retire from UNC Charlotte Dec. 31. An interim dean will be named this fall.  

The Division of Research is monitoring the situation and planning so that researchers will experience minimal to no disruption.
