#GivingTuesday, observed on Dec. 1, is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. UNC Charlotte is celebrating by supporting the Jamil Niner Student Pantry on campus to ensure that 49er students have the resources they need this holiday season.

“Giving Tuesday is a day that brings our community together to transform how we think about, talk about and participate in this season of giving,” said Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber. “I am grateful that Niner Nation has chosen to support the work being done at the Jamil Niner Student Pantry to help 49er students in need for this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign.”

The Jamil Niner Student Pantry provides assistance to UNC Charlotte students who struggle with food insecurity, so that every student has access to nutritious food. The pantry has remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic and is serving more students than ever before. This fall alone, more than 1,300 student orders have been fulfilled through the pantry.

“Every week the student pantry serves over 100 UNC Charlotte students, supplying them with the emergency food they need to live a happy and healthy life,” said Nikki Layden, graduate assistant for the Jamil Niner Student Pantry.

Axed Recipe Challenge

CJ ’13 & Samantha ’11 White Members of Niner Nation created unique recipes, using at least two of the most-needed items from the Jamil Niner Student Pantry, which included canned chicken, canned fruit, healthy cereal, salad dressing, jelly and pasta sauce.

The Axed Recipe Challenge participants are Andrew Baker ’15 (49ers Bahamas Pasta Bowl), Kristin Coffey ’20 and Rachael Forester (Niner on a Dime Yogurt Parfait), Rodney Graves ’97 (Niner Nuggets and Miss Bonnie’s Blackberry FroYo), Tahlieah Sampson ’22 (Niner Noodles) and CJ ’13 & Samantha ’11 White (Ain’t Yo Mama’s Stuffed Peppers).

"My wife, Emily, and I are always thrilled when a fun opportunity to give back to our alma mater comes to fruition,” said Andrew Baker ’15. “The Axed Recipe Challenge is a great way to raise awareness for the Jamil Niner Student Pantry and support students who should feel comfortable and confident in their ability to live a nutrition-filled life."

Alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of UNC Charlotte are encouraged to vote for a fan favorite 49er dish by making a donation to the #GivingTuesday campaign at givingtuesday.uncc.edu by Dec. 1.

Chadwick Boyd ’93, food and lifestyle expert and judge on Hallmark channel has graciously agreed to choose an overall “Best Recipe” for the challenge, which will be announced on Dec. 3.
