The UNC Charlotte Staff Council is an important part of University governance, and as this year’s vice president, Karen Haar is ready to be part of the process.

“I’m looking forward to working with Vidal and the rest of the council,” said Haar. “Our motto for this year is ‘Progress is Moving Forward by Working Together,’ so my goal is to help make that happen in whatever way I can.”

Employees, through the Staff Council, have the opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns via the Staff Council, Haar explained. “Chancellor Dubois is very supportive of the council, and we can help make him aware of issues that affect staff members.”

Haar noted that the Staff Council recently completed a day-long retreat, and plans are underway for a number of initiatives, including the annual Fall Festival, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Although Haar is actively involved with the Staff Council, her primary duties are as an administrative assistant in the Office of the Registrar. The start of the academic year is a very busy time in her area.

“It’s an all-hands-on-deck situation,” said Haar. “Class registration concerns are high. Students come to us with scheduling issues, and we attempt to help them. Sometimes, we have to refer them back to their departments, but they often start with us.”

As the official record keeper regarding students, the Office of the Registrar has a full-time staff of 24, supplemented by eight to 10 student workers. Haar serves as the primary support person for the office. In addition to handling administrative matters related to budget, travel, payroll and purchasing, she helps supervise student employees.

Initially joining the University in 1999, Haar worked in the College of Health and Human Services for about six years before moving to the Dean of Students Office. During this time, she decided to complete her bachelor’s degree in communication studies.

“I walked across the stage four years ago, and so I know commencement is a special day for students,” said Haar. “Working in the Registrar’s Office, we help with commencement twice a year, so it is rewarding to be there to see students finish what they started. I know how proud I am that I was able to do it.”

A native of Creston, N.C., near Boone, Haar and husband John live in Concord with their “smart as whip” beagle-mix Molly. Taking a cruise is their favorite way to travel; they have been on trips to Alaska and the Mediterranean. Las Vegas is another top vacation spot each year. “Not to gamble. With all the resorts and the shows, there is a lot to do.”
