Former Duke lacrosse player to speak at Constitution Day observance

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

Reade Seligmann, former lacrosse player at Duke University, and attorney James Cooney will speak from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Monday, Sept. 24, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall, as part of the University’s Constitution Day observance.

Seligmann, now a student at Emory Law School, and Cooney, an attorney with Womble, Carlyle, Sandrige and Rice LLP, will address “No Need to Play the Game: Trial by Press Conference and the Presumption of Innocence.” Kathleen Nicolaides, a senior lecturer in criminal justice and criminology and pre-law advisor, will moderate this discussion, which is free and open to the public.

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, the Pre-law Society and the Center for Professional and Applied Ethics are cosponsoring this event in observance of Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day.) This federal holiday recognizes the ratification of the U.S. Constitution and those who have become citizens due to either coming of age or naturalization. Constitution Day is observed officially on Sept. 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution in 1787.
