Friday, September 14, 2012

Award-winning author and actor Hill Harper will present “The Conversation” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

In this talk, which will highlight topics from his recently published book, Hill will focus on central themes, such as contemporary relationships, the nature and evolution of love and sex across generations, and the keys to communications between males and females.

“We believe that Mr. Harper will provide the students, staff and community with ideas and guidance on how to maintain communication and positive relationships with one another, which will serve to benefit ourselves as well as the community surrounding us," said Sandrine Uwera, a senior public health major and director of Talks and Topics for the Campus Activities Board, which is cosponsoring the presentation. Other sponsors are the Multicultural Resource Center, Distinguished Speakers Forum and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

An American film, television and stage actor and author, Harper is a graduate of Brown University, Harvard Law School and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He began pursuing acting in the early 1990s. He is best known for the recurring role of Sheldon Hawkes on “CSI:NY.”

Harper’s first book, the New York Times best-selling “Letters to a Young Brother: MANifest Your Destiny” was published in 1996; it received an American Library Association Award. “The Conversation: How Black Men and Women Can Build Loving, Trusting Relationships” was released by Penguin Books in September 2010.

Admission to Harper’s talk is free for students, $5 for UNC Charlotte staff and $10 for the general public.
