Join the miles for wellness challenge

Monday, October 1, 2012

Getting motivated to exercise is no easy task, and group exercise can be a simple solution. UNC Charlotte employees are being offered another opportunity to experience the camaraderie and encouragement that comes from being part of a fitness challenge team by joining the upcoming N.C. Border Walk http://www.osp.state.nc.us/Wellness/index.htm.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 1, this walking challenge will take participants (virtually) through every North Carolina county - from Currituck to Brunswick. The walk will end Thursday, Nov. 15.

A limited number of pedometers will be available to participants through the Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness (ACCEHW). The Office of State Personnel is coordinating this sixth annual Miles to Wellness Challenge.

According to Sophia Jordan-Marshall, interim director of recreational services and chair of the ACCEHW, the Miles to Wellness walking challenge events are designed to encourage and support employees to increase their level of physical activity to achieve a minimum of 10,000 steps (five miles) most days of the week.

At UNC Charlotte, ACCEHW will co-sponsor the virtual walk. To track their steps, teams will use the University-developed Web site www.411fit.com that provides registered users a number of exercise and nutritional tools.
