John Smail is now the associate provost for undergraduate studies and dean of University College. According to the Office of Academic Affairs, this new title recognizes the work Smail was doing across campus to improve undergraduate student success.

As associate provost and dean of University College, Smail administers policies and procedures to enhance student success, manages the general education program and advising for undeclared students and provides leadership for “Prospect for Success,” the University’s Quality Enhancement Project.

University College, which serves as the academic home for students who do not have a declared academic major, promotes undergraduate learning on a broader scale by coordinating the University’s general education program, ensuring that all students graduate with the skills and contextual awareness essential for educated citizens in the 21st century.

The area of undergraduate studies encompasses the University College; the University Advising Center; the freshman seminar program; and “Prospect for Success” and serves as a partner in University-wide efforts to improve student retention and graduation.
