Street name change to honor alums

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

UNC Charlotte recently received approval from the City of Charlotte to rename High Rise Road to Alumni Way to honor the contributions of all University alumni. When completed, Alumni Way will offer a direct connection from the campus’ main entrance to the Harris Alumni Center at Johnson Glen, making the center more accessible to students, said Niles Sorensen, vice chancellor for the Division for University Advancement.

Toby Creek Road, which also goes by Harris Alumni Center, will change to Alumni Way so the entire roadway between campus’ south side entrance and the front entrance share the same name. Alumni Way will run through South Village’s largely freshman community; however, the name change is appropriate as the goal is to have these students become alumni.

“We hope that this connection will encourage our students to get involved in the alumni association while they are on campus and remain involved and proud Niners throughout their lives,” said Sorensen.
