University to host state geography bee

Monday, April 1, 2013

UNC Charlotte will host the top 100 young geography whizzes from across North Carolina on Friday, April 5, for the state-level geographic bee; participants will be competing for a spot in the 25th annual National Geographic Bee that will be held in Washington, D.C., in May.

This past fall, fourth- to eighth-graders across the state began the process by using materials prepared by National Geographic. The statewide contests are designed to encourage teachers to include geography in the classroom. Challenging bees were held at the school level to determine the participants for the April 5 statewide bee.

The 100 state finalists will compete to represent North Carolina in Washington, D.C. The winner will receive $100, the “Complete National Geographic on DVD” and a spot in the national competition, being held at the National Theater and hosted by Alex Trebek.

Google co-sponsors the National Geographic Bee, and Plum Creek co-sponsors the statewide bees.
