Duke Energy’s sustainability team recently visited UNC Charlotte to learn more about the campus’ sustainability initiatives.
The team received presentations from Regina Guyer, executive director of the Environmental Assistance Office and associate director, IDEAS Center, and Sandra Clinton, associate director, IDEAS Center. Duke members also learned about the University’s mini-bin program from Devin Hatley, environmental educator in facilities management, and Kathy Boutin-Pasterz, recycling coordinator. They also discussed the University’s overall recycling and food waste composting programs.
At the Richardson Stadium, the Duke team learned about the facility’s zero waste efforts, before heading to EPIC, where Michael Lizotte, University sustainability officer, and Nicole Peterson, a faculty member in the Anthropology Department, gave presentations.
Peterson talked about the Integrated Network for Social Sustanaiblity, funded by the National Science Foundation and the IDEAS Center. Peterson is working to create an interdisciplinary national and international network of researchers around the theme of social sustainability to, in part, help technical and professional groups appreciate how social sustainability applies to them.
