November academic advising workshops scheduled

The Office of Academic Services offers free workshops to University advisors on a variety of topics. November’s offerings in the Academic Advisor Development Program include:

“Helping Students to Better Understand and Become More Engaged in the Career Development Process” at 12:15 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, in Denny Building, Room 217. In this new workshop, participants will be introduced to stages of career development based on theories and practice compared to how students first typically approach making a career choice – ranging from the “clueless without a purpose” to the “single option determined” student. Facilitators Kim Buch, psychology, and Denise Dwight Smith and Sharon Thorpe, University Career Center for Work, Service and Internships, will offer tips for success in motivating students and helping them better understand how career, personal and academic goals are intertwined; they also will suggest ways in which concepts and exercises may be integrated into courses.

“Advising in General Education and the Major” will be at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Friday Building, Room 112. Presenters Carol Leeman, communication studies, and John Smail, dean of the University College, will cover the fundamentals of General Education require­ments. They also will explain how these courses may be used to boost students’ success in their major. Strategic tips that will come in handy when review­ing transfer credit or ensuring that students do not duplicate their General Edu­cation courses will be provided, too.

“Developing a Working Knowledge of Academic Services and Referral Processes” will be at 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, in Friday Building, Room 117. Participants will learn about resources available to students and how to effectively refer students to they are motivated to action is this workshop facilitated by Cynthia Wolf Johnson, associate provost for academic services; Shonta LeMaster, director, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Advising Center; and Howard Simms, assistant director, Office of Multicultural Academic Services.
