Film reflects spirit of mutual understanding

UNC Charlotte is committed to equality of educational opportunity and does not discriminate against applicants, students, or employees based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age or disability. In keeping with this commitment, UNC Charlotte actively seeks to promote diversity in its educational environment through its recruitment, enrollment, and hiring practices.

One example – among many – of programming that grows out of this commitment is the screening of “My So-Called Enemy” at 7 p.m., Nov. 19, in the Student Union Movie Theater. Spanning seven years, the film follows six Palestinian and Israeli teenage girls committed to justice and mutual understanding after participating in a women’s leadership program. This film documents how the young women’s transformative experience of knowing their “enemies” as human beings in the United States meets with the realities of their lives back home in the Middle East. The screening and discussion afterward is co-sponsored by the Office of International Programs; the Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund; Philosophy Department; Department of Religious Studies; Department of Global, International and Area Studies; Film Studies; Hillel; and the Muslim Students Association. Information about the Nov. 19 event is available online.

As reflected in its institutional Mission Statement, UNC Charlotte is committed to the maintenance of “a robust intellectual environment that values social and cultural diversity, free expression, collegiality, integrity, and mutual respect.”

UNC Charlotte is recognized as a leader in developing a campus culture and atmosphere that highly values diversity and inclusion. The University maintains the Chancellor’s Diversity Fund to support faculty, staff and student initiatives promoting the daily value of diversity in the intellectual life of the campus.  The University also maintains a cabinet-level Council on University Community, which is charged with leading diversity efforts on campus. More information on UNC Charlotte initiatives related to diversity and inclusion is posted online.
