Top projects named at Senior Design Expo

Tuesday, December 9, 2014

Three projects by students from the Lee College of Engineering were judged to be the best at the recent Industrial Senior Design Expo. During the event, project teams presented their completed projects and mid-project design posters.

“Sound Integration into a Shower” won first place. The device, which is water resistant and Bluetooth-compatible, incorporates sound into a shower door. It runs on a rechargeable battery that lasts six hours. Team members were Christopher English, Elizabeth Hurtado Escobar, Galo Lopez, David Monts and Daniel Simoneaux; Asis Nasipuri, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was the faculty mentor.

Second place went to “RFMD PCBTR, Analysis and Design of PCB Traces for Cellular Frequencies.” In this project, the students researched, analyzed and designed a printed circuit board that provides a reduction in signal loss for cellular frequencies by more than 10 percent. Derrick Adams, Brett Cockerham and Mayangi Mvutu were the team members with Maciej Noras, associate professor of electrical engineering technology, the faculty mentor.

A project team that developed the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers vehicle that will be used in the May 2015 competition claimed third place.  A simulation was used to optimize the suspension and powertrain of the vehicle, and the simulation was validated by actual track testing. Members of the team were Ryan Copping, Aaron Duran, Timothy Nifong and Nazarii Olkhovskyi; Kent Day, assistant professor of motorsports, served as faculty mentor.
