OASES celebrates record number of scholarships
Often nontraditional students face challenges beyond those of college-aged students as they begin or return to college. Scholarships are one way to overcome the financial barrier, and 2015 was a record-setting year for the Office of Adult Students and Evening Services.
For 2015-16, OASES awarded nearly $150,000 in scholarships to 78 students. The recipients and donors recently attended a luncheon to celebrate this milestone.
Tina McEntire, associate provost for enrollment management, congratulated the recipients and expressed appreciation to the individuals and organizations that provided the much-needed support. She noted that the University continues to enroll greater numbers of first-year and transfer students with nearly 75 percent of undergraduates in need of financial aid.
“Interest in UNC Charlotte is at an unprecedented level, with record numbers of applicants and new enrolled students who have stronger academic backgrounds and who are more diverse than ever,” said McEntire. “OASES continues to serve our nontraditional population, and thanks to the generous support of our donors, these students are on the way to achieving their degrees.”
Margaret Drummond and William Loesel are two such students; they spoke at the OASES celebratory luncheon.
Drummond, who returned to college to complete a bachelor’s degree in English, plans to continue studies toward a master’s degree in creative writing. She said the provisions made by OASES scholarships are making it possible for dreams to come true. A past Osher Reentry Scholarship recipient, Drummond was awarded an ANSWER Scholarship housed at the Foundation for the Carolinas.
For Loesel, a Belk College of Business student, earning his degree is a way to set an example to his children about the importance of setting goals and meeting expectations. Originally from New York, Loesel said education was not stressed in his home, but along the way he benefited from mentors at work and through meeting his wife on a chance encounter on the subway. He started his degree in business administration after he and his family relocated to Charlotte.
“From our students’ remarks today, it is evident that our nontraditional students have many talents and bring a sincere desire and commitment to completing their degrees,” said Janet Daniel, director of OASES. “They enrich our classrooms and communities with their experiences, and they truly benefit from our individual donors support and that from organizations in the greater Charlotte region.”
