According to Tyler Sytsma, University sustainability coordinator, one of the “more exciting aspects” of Sustainability Week will be the campus cleanup. The Charlotte Green Initiative (CGI), which is the student green fund, has approved a proposal to award two Adopt-A-Spot locations to student organizations – one with the highest number of volunteers and the other to the student organization with the highest percentage of the organization’s membership to participate in the cleanup.

“Last semester, the Adopt-A-Spot program relaunched on campus at the request of several student organizations,” said Sytsma. “This was made possible through several grants submitted and approved by CGI. At the time, student organizations were expressing a desire to ‘give back to their community’ by conducting ongoing service projects on campus.”

Eleven Adopt-A-Spot locations, to date, are funded in various areas throughout campus. The number of applications for funding far exceed the number of which funding is available – thus the decision to fund additional locations through this incentive.

While student organizations are the only groups eligible to win an a "spot," the cleanup is open to anyone who would like to volunteer to make the campus a more beautiful place.
