UrbanEden, UNC Charlotte’s entry for the 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, won the People’s Choice Award at the contest finals in California.

The College of Education’s Urban Education Collaborative recently held its inaugural conference “Pursuing Extraordinary Outcomes in Public Education” at UNC Charlotte Center City.

 UNC Pembroke put up 503 yards of total offense and built a 21-8 halftime lead on its way to a 45-22 victory over  host Charlotte 49ers to spoil the University’s first football Homecoming game.

The Office of Women’s Programs is sponsoring an exhibit of paintings by Erika Clarke to generate awareness about October being Relationship Violence Awareness Month. The display will be through Friday, Nov. 1, on the second floor of the Student Union.

While students moved into Belk Hall this fall, the University formally dedicated the facility this week. It honors a staunch University supporter.

The Staff Council Fall Festival drew a large crowd to the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Tuesday, where attendees enjoyed free food, music, games and other activities. As part of this annual tradition, the council sponsors baking and photography contests and a scavenger hunt.

On the Oct. 8 edition of "The Live Wire," Dave Broome, vice chancellor for legal affairs and general counsel, talked about the recent state law that allows conceal-carry guns on college campuses and how University policy was revised accordingly.

The Novant Health Breast Center’s mobile unit will be on campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, at the loading dock behind the Barnhardt Student Activity Center. According to Novant Health officials, mammograms are covered as a preventative screening every 366 days starting at age 40 for most insurance plans; prospective participants should bring their insurance card.

The 2013 Giving Green Campaign is off to a strong start, and the Giving Green incentive raffles are a way to keep that momentum going.

The University Career Center’s annual Majors Day, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 17, is an opportunity for students to explore all of their academic options, including majors, minors, concentrations and certificates.

The Lee College of Engineering has awarded its Alan Kulwicki Memorial Scholarship to Justin LaDuke. A formal presentation will be made Friday, Oct. 11, at Charlotte Motor Speedway prior to the Dollar General 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and the Internal Audit Department notes that everyone has a role to play in cyber security.
