‘Spotlight 2018’ to feature alumni, student art
The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association’s inaugural alumni and student art exhibit “Spotlight 2018” runs from Thursday, June 28, through Thursday, July 12, at C3 Lab in South End. The exhibit is being curated by a panel of UNC Charlotte alumni.
Sara Simmons (’15) is one of the 17 UNC Charlotte artists featured in the exhibit. She will be showing two pieces from her “Faces” portrait series. Painted in acrylic paint on canvas, her series explores the conclusions people subconsciously draw from quickly examining each other’s faces.
“This exhibit offers alumni artists like me the opportunity to show our work in a reputable gallery, elevating and recognizing our work,” said Simmons. “As a UNC Charlotte alumna, I am excited to stay connected to the University through an event like this and to meet other UNC Charlotte alumni and student artists at the opening exhibit.”
Charlotte-based artist Sharon Dowell (’02) has been instrumental in helping to organize the exhibit for the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association. She will be showing two of her works on paper from a recent series inspired by her travels abroad. Interested in the documentation of memory and place, Dowell strives to find beauty in often overlooked structures and spaces.
“It is an honor to be asked to participate, and as an arts alumna, I enjoy being able to give back to UNC Charlotte,” said Dowell.
A special opening night reception will be from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, June 28, “Spotlight 2018” will be part of the South End Gallery Crawl on Friday, July 6.
