Sustainability Week events scheduled

Get involved in UNC Charlotte’s annual Sustainability Week, being held Monday through Friday, Oct. 15-19. This observance informs the University community about sustainable practices on campus.

Monday, Oct. 15 – Tree Banding

8 to 9:30 a.m. – Hauser Alumni Pavilion

Tree banding is a common practice that helps protect trees from cankerworms. Interested volunteers should meet at Hauser Alumni Pavilion, where grounds staff members will teach them how to properly band trees and direct them to those in need of this treatment.

Volunteers are encouraged to register to ensure there are enough supplies. Participants can stay for the entire 90 minutes or serve a shorter period.

Tuesday, Oct. 16 – Campus Cleanup

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – McMillan Greenhouse, South Village (Laurel Lawn), Motorsports Lab and UNC Charlotte Center City

Volunteers will help pick up litter to keep the campus beautiful and clean. Litter sticks, gloves, bags and hand sanitizer will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to register, though drop-ins are welcome.

Wednesday, Oct. 17 – Transportation Fair

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – COED/CHHS Plaza

Attendees will learn about sustainable modes of travel that can be utilized to, from and around campus. Many Charlotte area representatives will be at the event.

Thursday, Oct. 18 – Student Gathering

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. – Popp Martin Student Union

This third annual event is sponsored by Charlotte Green Initiative (CGI). Attendees can enjoy pizza and pumpkin carving and painting while networking. Student organizations will have the opportunity to share their information about their goals, values and the work in which they are involved. Interested attendees are encouraged to register.

Friday, Oct. 19 – Electronic Waste (E-waste) Collection

8 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Recycling Facility

Unwanted electronics can be donated and properly recycled during this collection drive. Licensed professionals will delete all personal data from devices. If applicable, refurbished items will be donated to community members in need.

The recycling facility is located behind the Facilities Management/PPS Building. Participants should use Poplar Terrace Drive and follow signage to the drop-off area.
